Tree of 40: Along with balancing the environment in nature, trees and plants also provide us with food and other essential things. We get vegetables, flowers, fruits, wood etc. from them. There are different types of trees and plants for each type of vegetable, flower and fruit etc. It is the rule of nature that only one type of fruit grows on a single tree. But you will be surprised to know that this law of nature has been broken at one place in the world. Yes, there are 40 different types of fruits on a single tree. Hearing this, many people may not believe it, but it is true. Let’s know about this unique tree…
Sam von Aiken, Professor of Visual Art at Syracuse University in New York, has made this unique feat a reality. Through grafting technique, he has succeeded in growing 40 varieties of fruits on one tree. This unique tree has been named ‘Tree of 40’, in which 40 types of fruits like cherry, ber, satlu, apricot etc. grow.
How did it start?
Professor Vaughan explains that he started the Tree of 40 project in 2008. Professor Vaughan tells that once he was surprised to see 200 types of trees in a garden and that garden was also very dirty due to lack of funds. Many old species of trees were planted in it. Vaughan took this garden on lease for research and started research here with the help of grafting technique.
What is grafting technique?
After years of hard work, he prepared such a tree, which bears 40 types of fruits. According to reports, Aiken has so far gifted 16 such plants to museums, gardens and art exhibitions etc. Actually, grafting is a planting technique in which a branch of the tree along with the bud is cut and separated in winter and it is planted in the main tree by making a hole.
The cost of a single tree is about 19 lakhs.
A special coating is applied at the place where the twig and the tree join, which contains many nutrients. After doing all this, a bandage is tied at this place for the whole winter. After this, the branch slowly gets attached to the tree on its own and fruits start growing in it. This is called grafting. By the year 2014, the professor had prepared 16 such trees. The more special this tree is, the more expensive it is. The cost of a single Tree of 40 is around Rs 19 lakh.
